I thought I would enjoy writing an essay about something I care about, but it’s been a lot harder than I’d imagined. I’m finding it difficult to write a personal narrative in first person without giving it a kitschy, informal sort of tone.

I’m one of the only skaters at my club who chooses their own music, which, this year, is Malaguena. It exists in crazy remix versions, and has been done by more orchestras than I can count. Out of the dozens of orchestrations available, I chose the one that was recorded in poor quality some 20 odd years ago, and hasn’t been remastered since.
